A Nation in Mourning: Kenya’s Basketball Community Pays Tribute to Raila Odinga
In a statement released this week, the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF) announced the suspension of all basketball activities at both national and county levels during the seven days of national mourning declared by the government in honour of the late Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga.
The late Odinga was not only a towering political figure and former Prime Minister but also a long-time supporter of Kenyan sports, particularly initiatives that empowered young people through athletics.
“He believed in the power of sport to unite and uplift,” said KBF Secretary General Ambrose Kisoi. “When we play, we play for the spirit of Kenya and Raila embodied that spirit fully.”
Across the country, players have been sharing tributes on social media. Some posted photos of Raila attending local games, cheering alongside fans or congratulating teams during tournaments.
May his soul rest in eternal peace. 🕊️
